Henry Chinaski takes a job sorting mail in Los Angeles and endures twelve years of bureaucratic absurdity, graveyard shifts, and hard living. Semi-autobiographical and unflinching, Bukowski's first novel is funny, bleak, and built around a male protagonist who never softens the edges — work, whiskey, and the long haul between punches of the time clock.
